Waterfall At East Hampton

Waterfall at East Hampton

What is it about waterfalls that attracts people?  I mean, all they are is water running over rocks.  So what’s the big deal?  For me, the attraction is the power of the water, the force of nature, if you will.   And it’s the sound, (nature’s music) that has this wonderful calming effect on the psyche.   This Waterfall in East Hampton, tucked away down a narrow country lane, doesn’t know, or doesn’t care, that it’s one of the smallest waterfalls in the state of Connecticut.  It flows and hums and sometimes even rumbles like the big boys.

Although I’m not too keen on paintings with muted colors, preferring bold and vivid, I am a sucker for rocks and stones, and here was a wall of rocks and stones, with a the bonus of a waterfall thrown in to keep me calm while painting en plein air, which is not my preference.

Val D’Orcia Tuscan Landscape

The definition of Landscape is: “view of natural scenery.”  Does this then exclude any man-made structures, i.e. bridges, barns, buildings, houses, etc?  Where does one draw the line?  Many landscapes include a fence.  If a fence is allowed, why not permit a barn? What about people?  What percentage of a painting can a structure or people occupy before the painting is no longer considered a landscape?  These are questions I honestly have never cared about.  To landscape purists who believe anything non-organic has no place in a landscape, I apologize for luring you into reading this post by utilizing “landscape” in my tags.

While driving through Italy’s Val D’Orcia region, I spied this cart overflowing with flowers, the colors of which mirrored the explosive sunset.  Or was it the other way around? Hmmm…  Since I’ve included a cart and a barn,  is it a landscape or a painting of a cart and barn?

Hmmm… Qui ho dipinto anche un carretto e una stalla. Dunque, è una paesaggistica, oppure un quadro d’un carretto e una stalla?

For me, big bold colors reflect the joys of a tropical island.  Taking life too seriously is for city dwellers, on the tropical island in my mind’s eye, I don’t see brown palm trees, I prefer purple; my turtle’s shell isn’t grey, it’s orange; and my sun is one big happy fella.  In this painting I purposely omitted details, shadows, and folds, I wanted to keep it as uncomplicated as island life.  It’s all about celebrating color and simplicity.

Painting in Italy / Rome

My frequent trips throughout Italy persistently spark my urge to paint.  Although it’s impossible to resist an occasional Tuscan sun-drenched landscape or turquoise Mediterranean seascape, I’m primarily lured to paint Italy’s diverse architecture.

Rome is a prime example of this diversity.

Certainly when we speak of Rome and architecture, the first buildings that come to mind are Trajan’s Forum, Caracalla’s Baths, the Colosseum, and Hadrian’s Pantheon, just to mention a handful of the heavy hitters.  But I like the back streets of Rome.

I like to shop in the back streets, eat in the back streets, and paint in the back streets.  This is where life happens.  This is where you can guess at the occupations of the inhabitants by their clothes that hang on lines that crisscross the narrow streets and alleyways.  A banker’s white shirt might hang just below the street sweeper’s blue uniform.  There’s no class system on the clotheslines in the back streets.  This is where residents sit on wood and wicker chairs set outside on the sidewalk to discuss politics and exchange recipes, often in the same sentence.  They knit, string tomatoes, read, and nap.  Take away the TV’s, cell phones, ipods, and Vespas, and their every day lives mirror that of their ancestral Roman and Etruscan forefathers.

In this painting, Via Roma, the lopsided shades reflect the lifestyles between ancient and modern Rome: diverse yet connected.

Venezia – Venice

Fiction writers glean ideas for character descriptions by various means.  If you’re a writer who enjoys sitting in a public location and scribbling notes on passersby, my recommendation for the primo spot to garner a wealth of character traits is Piazza San Marco, in Venice, Italy.  Likewise, the Piazza is also the idea place for artists to gather reference material  for figurative paintings and portraiture.

By noon until the wee-morning hours, every conceivable facial feature and physical trait can be observed in the non-stop crush of visitors from all corners of the globe.

There are three outside cafes that I recommend for optimum people gazing: The Florian; The Quadri; and my favorite, The Chioggia.  I prefer the Chioggia for two reasons: one, they play great jazz, and two, because it faces the side of the Piazza where visitors enter after disembarking at the Vaporetto Stop.  This way you capture their expressions when they view the Piazza for the first time.  Thomas Coryat wrote of this experience: “…For so strange and rare a place as this, glory of it, that my first entrance thereof it did amaze or rather ravish my senses.”

Certainly, the travel guides will caution that sitting at an outside table in Piazza San Marco can be costly, but it’s not over the top, especially considering what you get for that 18 Euro Strega.  If you wish, you can sit and sip the same drink for 4 or more hours, and you’re sitting where Shelley said: “It’s temples and palaces did seem like fabrics of enchantment piled to heaven.”  Give me a break; does it get any better than that?  And to top it off, you get to chronicle the expression on someone’s face whose senses have been ravished.

If you’re really on the dole, you can pack a snack to munch with your drink.  The waiter may give you a “look,” but he won’t ask you to leave, nor will he hustle you to buy another drink.  If you explain that you’re a writer or an artist doing research, he will turn the vexed “look” into a broad understanding smile; Italians love artists, poets, and writers.

When you do call it a night, be a gracious guest and don’t stiff the waiter or the band.

Most of the time, I prefer painting buildings to painting people.  They tend not to fidget or complain or change expressions.  The deserted calle in this painting is tucked away just a few steps from the tourist-choked Piazza San Marco.

Matera

For those adventurous artists who have squeezed the last drop from your yellow ochre and burnt sienna while painting Tuscan sunrises and sunsets, head south.  I’m not talking Rome or Naples or Salerno, I mean the Deep South that Carlo Levi wrote about in Christ Stopped At Eboli.

In 1935, The Fascists exiled Levi to this region as a political prisoner. For those unfamiliar with this book, it has nothing to do with religion or of Christ making a weekend get-away to the Basilicata region. It refers to the idea that if Christ was traveling south in Italy and doing his Godly thing along the way, then he stopped when he reached EboliLevi wrote: “upon my arrival, the peasants said, ‘we are not Christians, Christ stopped short of here, at Eboli.’ Christian, in their way of speaking meant human being.”  This “God-forsaken” region remains today a land outside time.

So, what do I like about this earthy and primeval region?  Just that. It’s earthy and primitive.  Matera is one of my favorite villages in the Basilicata region. It’s unique architecture and  steep, twisting alleyways are fun to explore and challenging to paint.

Red And Orange Flowers

Red And Orange Flowers

Red And Orange Flowers – Click on vase to enlarge image or to purchase giclee prints.

I know,  it’s a boring title.  But at the time that I did this painting, I was bored. I took an artist’s still life workshop and to my dismay, the subject was this boring, colorless vase with these faded pink flowers. Well, I did give it a try, but I kept falling asleep.  For me, flowers are the quintessential symbol of life.  This particular still life set up was just a bit too funeral parlor for me. So in order to complete the workshop, I tossed out those pathetic pale flowers, pitched the colorless vase, and punched up the back ground.  Red And Orange Flowers is the result.

Red Vespa – Jail Break Italian Style

For a long time, I wanted to do a painting of a Red Vespa, but I couldn’t decide on the background.  It seemed everything had already been done and I wanted my Red Vespa painting to be unique. Then I saw this wonderful wall and window in Rome with the stonework and bars in the window.  That was it, that was my inspiration for my Jail Break Italian Style.

Dancing On Moonbeams

Have you ever wondered what angels do all day and all night. Certainly, they must have some “down time” away from watching over all of us.  Well, I have an idea that some angels who love to dance spend their “off time” Dancing On Moonbeams. I mean, come on, I would if I could.

Often times I like to step away from the serious. In Island Love I did that.  Who says turtles have to be green or dolphins have to be grey?   Not me.  And where is it written that once we become adults we can no longer enjoy animated art?  Well, if it is written somewhere, I hope someone has the good sense to tear it up.  I think we all need to occasionally step back and not take life too seriously.

Fishing In New England – Click on bridge to enlarge image or to purchase giclee prints.

I wasn’t that excited when I began this plein air painting: a bridge, a lake, some trees, that was about it.  So I got to thinking, why weren’t there any boys out on that bridge, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine, fishing and skipping rocks?    I guess they were all closed up inside playing computer games.  Well, this painting needed something more, so if the real boys refused to come outside and play, then I’d just have to use my imagination and make up my own boys.

Tuscan View

My “Views To Go” series of paintings was created by accident.  I had just finished a trompe l’oeil mural of a window scene for a client and she lamented the fact that if she ever moved the mural would have to stay.  So I started painting my “Views To Go” acrylic on wrapped canvas paintings. Now my clients are able take their views from room to room or house to house.

Home For Lunch In Rome

It was such fun painting my first “Home For Lunch” bicycle scene, and just as much fun selling it, that I decided to paint it again. Ripose 1

I have always admired Matisse.  His flurry of primary colors never cease to thrill me.  And I find it exciting that he deliberately flouted the conventional rules of drawing and perspective.  I like the fact that he continued to develop throughout his career, and even though his eyesight failed him in his later years, he didn’t allow that to stop his creative juices from flowing.  In fact, the paper collages that he created in his last years are what associate him most to many people.

For those of you who are bothered by my spelling of Ripose, I assure you that I know the “i” is wrong, but I just like the way it looks better than the “e”.  Maybe I’m snagging a little advice from Matisse and flouting the spelling rules.

In Ripose 1 I was influenced my the simplicity of Matisse’s paper collages and the  suggestion of Paul Klee  to “take a line for a walk.”
