AMAZON REVIEW – BRIDGE OF SIGHS AND DREAMS

BRIDGE OF SIGHS AND DREAMS – Here is another lovely review on Amazon!  Thank you so much to journalist, Tom Soboleski, http://www.tomsobo.com for taking the time to write such an in-depth, lovely review!  Once again, I am over-the-moon and grateful for all the positive feedback I’ve received regarding my novel. For everyone who has read it and commented, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. For those of you who haven’t read it yet… I hope you are keeping it on your “must read” list. Cheers! Below, you can read Mr. Soboleski’s review.

Bridge of Sighs and Dreams by Pamela Allegretto is a

Bridge of Sighs and Dreams

Bridge of Sighs and Dreams

book that envelopes you from the first few pages. Ms Allegretto has a real gift for catchy, sharp dialogue and briskly moving the story along. Full of intrigue, adventure, humanity, love and war, it tells the story of how WWII impacted Italian civilians, turning their world upside down and pitting families and friends against each other in a gripping struggle of war’s horror and the struggle to survive it. One character is the most vile, despicable betrayer of friends and family that I’ve ever seen in literature. She shockingly betrays even her own family. This is a well told saga with keen insight into personalities and how war influences behaviors. Bravo to Pamela Allegretto for such a compellingly told story.

AMAZON REVIEW – BRIDGE OF SIGHS AND DREAMS

BRIDGE OF SIGHS AND DREAMS  –   AMAZON REVIEW –

WOW!  Talk about a review!  Thank you so much Wayne Hagstrom for taking the time to write such an in-depth, lovely review! Once again, I am over-the-moon with all the positive feedback I’ve received regarding my novel. And again, I am grateful for the proof that this is not merely “chick-lit.” For everyone who has read it and commented, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. For those of you who haven’t read it yet… I hope you are keeping it on your “must read” list. Cheers! Below, you can read Mr. Hagstom’s review.

Bridge of Sighs and Dreams
By Sharon Hagstrom – Wayne Hagstrom on February 10, 2016
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Pamela Allegretto’s latest novel “Bridge of Sighs and Dreams” is a non stop page turner that will have you riveted and deeply involved from beginning to end. They say it’s best to write “what you know” and the author has incorporated her visual ability as a painter and her life experience having lived in Italy into a captivating heart felt book. Her ability to include the smallest visual details and weave them into a cohesive whole separates her from the majority of writers who lack her artistic background. The writing is almost Hemingwayesque in its ability to visually imprint the individual scenes on the reader’s mind. We see this novel. The Italian experience during World War 2 is a much overlooked piece of fascinating historical territory that Allegretto mines with the expert eye of a painter and the instinct of a natural born storyteller. The characters jump at you–we feel their personalities and quickly become embedded with this family. We want to know “what happens next” and this feeling never leaves the reader throughout the book. The author keeps her chapters short and never bores us with superficial page fillers that bog down so many lesser reads. If surprise is the key element of a great story–this novel is full of the unexpected twists and turns that only the best books give us. Pour yourself a glass of Italian wine, sit down and open this novel–you won’t look at that cell phone for days.

BRIDGE OF SIGHS AND DREAMS

The use of imagery is a gift of Pamela Allegretto in her novel, Bridge of Sighs and Dreams. This is evident when Angelina “imagine[s] herself as a cat burglar, stealing [a] work of art to hang on the wall of her memory.” Much of the tension in the events throughout the novel is reliant on Angelina’s lesson from her mother that “to live in fear is to live half a life,” so she experiences the loss of many family and friends proving that her life is more valuable than living in fear of the Nazi’s or Germans in Nazi-occupied Rome. With the major tension of the novel coming from Lidia Corsini, who is reporting the movement and actions of Jews that ultimately cause their death and destruction by Hitler’s ruthless officers, Angelina strives to keep her daughter, Gina, and herself safe while hoping her husband, Pietro, who has gone off to war, is still alive. Allegretto keeps the reader flipping pages as the events become more sinister through the ongoing efforts of Lidia to acquire power and money. Lidia is simply evil, demonic, the epitome of hell fire. The author’s use of metaphoric language is interesting as experienced in all of her characters; one such example is when Rosalina spews something hurtful out of her mouth and after realizing it, she states, “sometimes my words have a mind of their own. They jump out of my mouth, and before I can stop them, they misbehave. I will take those words back, chew them up, and swallow them.” The author gives life to her language as shown in this brilliant personification. The Bridge of Sighs and Dreams evokes a diversity of emotions in the reader as the characters deal with Mussolini’s Fascist regime and the Nazi occupation while managing to live or die with their personal biases, hates, loves, and dreams.

This is a very moving and fast paced story that takes place in Italy during the rise of the brown shirts and the occupation by the Nazis in Rome. The main characters are artist and their families and their story is as can be expected’ heart breaking and heart warming. Very well written with character you will like and some you will hate. I highly recommend this book.

Nazi’s, Fascists, greed, and revenge, “The Bridge of Sighs and Dreams” has it all. A suspenseful story of survival that will keep the reader on the edge of their seat. I really enjoyed this book that was so unpredictable. Pamela Allegretto paints a picture of one family’s love and hope during occupied Italy of WW 2. A must read.

SAX SEX

Sax Sex
I don’t know what compelled me to do this painting, but oddly enough, I finished it 2 days ago on October 6th. That day just happens to be International Saxophone Day. Yes, that’s really a “Day!” It seems Saxophone Day is celebrated on November 6th of each year in remembrance of Antoine-Joseph (Adolphe) Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. Adolphe Sax was born on November 6, 1814 in Dinant in Wallonia, Belgium.
I am a huge jazz fan, and to me, the saxophone is one sexy sounding instrument, be it, soprano, tenor, alto, or baritone. Since Saxophone Day is October 6th, I thought I would list my 6 favorite Saxophone players. They are: Grover Washington Jr. / Julian (Cannonball) Adderley / Stan Getz / Sonny Rollins / John Coltrane / Charlie (Bird) Parker
I know my saxophones aren’t anatomically correct, they’re not meant to be. I leave that to the “realist” painters. My saxophones are too into creating beautiful music together (i.e. sex) to worry about outward appearances.

EXPO 2015 Milano Poetry Translations

 Da Ischia L’Arte

Here’s some fun news: The Italian poetry anthology “Da Ischia L’Arte,” written by Bruno Mancini and Roberta Panizza, in which several of my translations appeared, was featured at EXPO Milano 2015, where over 20 million visitors attended!
http://www.emmegiischia.com/wordpress/expo-milano/

TRANSLATING POETRY

How Translating One Poem Led To A Profitable Spin-off

Until I stumbled into this little side gig of translating Italian poetry, my idea of poetry didn’t go much further than, “Roses are red…” etc., etc. Occasionally, I read and reread and tried to understand some of the poetry published in The New Yorker, but first of all, it didn’t rhyme, so that threw me off. Then, on many occasions, even after a third or fourth read, I was still asking: “Say what?” I must have snoozed through the poetry segment in English class because all this free flowing thought was news to me. And now, I was being asked to translate it.

Fortunately, my first stab at translating Italian poetry was the poem “Attimo” (“Moment”) by Luciano Somma, Italy’s preeminent poet and two-time winner of the Silver Medal of the President of the Republic. After viewing my writing in various Italian literary journals, Luciano sought me out to translate the poem “Attimo.” His imagery of “the sun yawning between clouds and a dove dying in the snow” drew me into the truth that each “moment” in life is “merely a grain of history, a drawing in the wind.” I was hooked, and the seed was planted. That one free translation led to six (paid) dual-language poetry books, in collaboration with Luciano and two other poets.

So how do you go about finding foreign poets who want their work translated into English? Do some research. Use your “search-engine” and type in: poetry/French, poetry/German, poetry/Spanish, etc. Start reading various poets, find out if they are published, self-published is actually better than traditionally published, as traditional publishers usually have their own cache of translators.

Contact the poets: Always write in their native tongue, so they can see that you are truly fluent in their language and not just offering up your version of Google Translate.

Compliment their work: Don’t merely say, “I like your poetry,” pick out a phrase or a line that grabs you and comment on that.

Ask if they’re interested in having their poetry translated for publication on their website or eBook or print book.

Offer a free translation for their review.

List your credentials: Let them see that you are a serious writer with more than a pedestrian knowledge of grammar.

What to know: Translating poetry presents challenges not found when translating basic prose. You arm yourself with the same essential tools: dictionary, verb book, and thesaurus, however, for poetry translations, you also need to add creativity. Your aim is to maintain a line-for-line translation while sustaining the author’s “voice.” Given the differences in sentence structure between languages, this can be tricky, and occasionally no matter how you hard you try, a line-for-line is impossible. Other problems occur when you overuse the thesaurus to a point where the word takes on a new meaning. This happens when you think your word fits the “idea” better than that of the poet. A good translator needs to put ego aside and keep the poet in mind at all times. If you think you can do better, write your own poetry. Don’t rewrite the work of someone who has trusted you and paid you to do a worthy translation.

Many people assume that translating is little more than looking up each word and writing down its English equivalent. If you believe that’s the case, you need only go to Babel Fish, Google Translate, or one of the other on-line translation sites, paste a small amount of text in another language and then “hit” translate. More often than not, the translation, although in English, is almost as difficult to understand as its foreign counterpart.

There are times when a poem is so encumbered in idiomatic nuance and ambiguous metaphors it can take as long, or possibly longer, to translate than it took the poet to write it. I’ve experienced this on a few occasions, where even after extensive conversations with the poet, I’m still scratching my head and wondering how he got “this” idea out of “that.”

Even though many poets on the Internet are amateur writers, believe me, there is some real talent out there. An unknown today could end up to be the next Pablo Neruda. And if you get in on the ground floor, Pablo#2 might very well take you and your translations along for the ride.

My Heartfelt thanks to photojournalist Caryn B Davis and her husband, artist Leif Nilsson, for their generous offer to host a book signing of Bridge of Sighs and Dreams at their Spring Street Studio in Chester, CT. I am speechless, and for those who know me, you know that this is a rare, okay, never, occurrence. Caryn is an amazing and highly respected photographer and journalist, and Leif is not only THE most popular East Coast, and beyond, painter, but also, he plays a mean banjo! WOW! BRIDGE OF SIGHS AND DREAMS

Bridge of Sighs and Dreams_highRes

Nazi-occupied Rome sets the stage for Bridge of Sighs and Dreams, where the lives of two women collide in an arena of deception, greed, and sacrifice.
Following an allied attack, Angelina Rosini flees to Rome from her bombed-out village and a ruthless Nazi officer bent on revenge. In Rome, the spirited portrait artist channels her creativity into the art of survival for herself and her young daughter. Unwilling to merely endure, and armed with ingenuity, wit, and unyielding optimism, she enters the shadow world of the Resistance where she zigzags through a labyrinth of compassionate allies and cunning spies.

Meanwhile, Lidia Corsini quenches her lust for power and wealth by turning in Jews to the Nazi Police attaché with whom she has formed an alliance. Her spiral into immorality accelerates as swiftly as the Jewish population dwindles, and soon neither her husband nor her son is immune to her madness.

Once Angelina discovers the consequences of Lidia’s greed, she conspires to put an end to the treacheries; but in doing so, she becomes the target of Lidia’s most sinister plot.

Bridge of Sighs and Dreams is a story of betrayal, dignity, and purpose that highlights the brutality toward Italian citizens, under both Mussolini’s Fascist regime and the Nazi occupation, and illustrates the tenacity of the human spirit.
