I chose to draw my Buddha in this minimalist style to convey the no frills, tranquility of Buddhism.  Although unconnected, the lines are in harmony with each other in the same manner that our seemingly unconnected lives are in harmony with the universe and thus, in fact, we are all connected in spirit.

Roman Table

Wine and pears are the perfect Romandessert, so that was my inspiration for this painting.  It was a bit tricky for me, as this was my first attempt at painting pears, and several times I was tempted to just drink the wine and eat the pears and forget about the painting.  In the end, I was happy that I waited until I had finished the painting before I enjoyed the “fruits” of my labor.

Tuscan Table

The warm Tuscan sunset inspired the rich colors for this Tuscan Table.  As I am not usually a still life painter, it was a bit of a struggle to keep my eggplant from looking like a mutant cucumber and my onion from taking on the appearance of a cherry on steroids.

Mi piacciono tanto i colori del tramonto di Toscana in questo quadro.  Per me, l’immagini erano un puo` difficile dipingere, e piu` di due o tre volte ho voluto smettere e gettare  il quadro nel bidone della spazzatura. Ma adesso, sono contenta col quadro.

Venetian Table

I titled this painting “Venetian Table” for 2 reasons: The bowl filled with onions made me think of Venice’s celebrated “fegato con cipolle” / “liver with onions,” and the difficulty I had painting the onions made me cry enough tears to fill the Grand Canal. Sicilian Table

Since cheese is my favorite food, I felt it was high time I painted a nice ball of aged provolone. Then I had to decide what to add to it. That was easy. What better accompaniment than wine, tomatoes, and olive oil? Buon appetito!

One of my favorite 60’s singing groups was The Mamas and Papas.  Those were the days of tie-dye, peace, love, drugs, sex, and rock and roll, and The Mamas and Papas were the icing on the cake.  Cass Elliot  had a voice as clear as a bell and and strong as the wind.  She could belt out a tune that would make your skin tingle and your hair stand on end.  We lost her way too soon.   I had great fun doing this painting, it brought back a flood of wonderful memories.

In the 50’s and 60’s spending time in coffee houses was the “in” thing to do. I’m not talking Starbucks or Dunkin Doughnuts here, I mean the back street, backdoor, underground caverns where beatniks and beatnik wannabes shared their music and poetry.  This was where black was the uniform of the day, and men sported goatees and berets and women wore black tights and loads of black eyeliner.

Meet Bongo Man.  He was the reigning star of many a coffee house around the country.
