Dance Fever – Acrylic on wrapped canvas.

Whenever I get painter’s block (that’s what I call it when my mind hits a snag and can’t come up with a subject for my next painting) I revert to what I call fun art. I use the term fun art because aside from layout and pathways, there are no rules to follow. I’m free to use my imagination with the subject and color pallet.

In “Dance Fever” I combined my love of music and art with a playful nod to dance.

Venetian Gondolier

VENETIAN GONDOLIER

Fiction writers glean ideas for character descriptions by various means.  If you’re a writer who enjoys sitting in a public location and scribbling notes on passersby, my recommendation for the primo spot to garner a wealth of character traits is Piazza San Marco, in Venice.

By noon until the wee-morning hours, every conceivable facial feature and physical trait can be observed in the non-stop crush of visitors from all corners of the globe.

There are three outside cafes that I recommend for optimum people gazing: The Florian; The Quadri; and my favorite, The Chioggia.  I prefer the Chioggia for two reasons: one, they play great jazz, and two, because it faces the side of the Piazza where visitors enter after disembarking at the Vaporetto Stop.  This way you capture their expressions when they view the Piazza for the first time.  Thomas Coryat wrote of this experience: “…For so strange and rare a place as this, glory of it, that my first entrance thereof it did amaze or rather ravish my senses.”

Certainly, the travel guides will caution that sitting at an outside table in Piazza San Marco can be costly, but it’s not over the top, especially considering what you get for that 18 Euro Strega.  If you wish, you can sit and sip the same drink for 4 or more hours, and you’re sitting where Shelley said: “It’s temples and palaces did seem like fabrics of enchantment piled to heaven.”  Give me a break; does it get any better than that?  And to top it off, you get to chronicle the expression on someone’s face whose senses have been ravished.

If you’re really on the dole, you can pack a snack to munch with your drink.  The waiter may give you a “look,” but he won’t ask you to leave, nor will he hustle you to buy another drink.  If you explain that you’re a writer doing research, he will turn the vexed “look” into a broad understanding smile; Italians love artists, poets, and writers.

When you do call it a night, be a gracious guest and don’t stiff the waiter or the band.

No trip to Venice is complete without a ride in a gondola. PANSIES FOR ROSALINA

My Mom is no longer with me on this earth, but she is always in my heart. These flowers are for her. I wanted to paint bright bold colors, happy, joyful colors, not pastel, sappy colors.  No leaves, no frills, no sad pansy faces.

Mia Mama non sta ancora con me sulla terra, pero`, sta sempre nel mio mente. Ho voluto dipingere le viole del pensiero perche sono fiori di gioia.

New Orleans Jazz

I have always enjoyed the paintings of Marc Chagall.  His blend of reality and fantasy  makes his unique work sing.  Like Chagall,  my mind likes to wander outside the walls of reality.  In New Orleans Jazz,  I wanted to emphasize the vibrant New Orleans Jazz scene with bold colors. The floating musicians symbolize the ethereal sensation one gets when experiencing pure jazz.

The paintings of Joan Miro` inspired this 14”x18”acrylic on wrapped canvas abstract painting.   I wanted my shapes to play and mingle with one another and to have a party on my canvas where everyone’s invited, no matter If they’re square, round, or heart-shaped; black, yellow, blue, red, or purple.

REFLECTION

I have always liked the concept of trying to put myself in someone else’s shoes in order to better understand the basis of their emotions and actions. In this painting I wanted to delineate two abstract profiles that demonstrate the idea that when we are fleshed out and outwardly adorned we are all unique. But under the costumes and grease paint, we are one.

COLORADO MOUNTAIN VIEW

As a Colorado native, I thought it only fitting to include a view of the Rocky Mountains in my “Views To Go” series of tromp l’oeil window scenes.  For those of you who have never visited Colorado, yes, the mountains do appear purple from the city.  This painting, as the rest in this series, was painted on wrapped canvas to add to the illusion of a wood-trimmed window sill.

The original paining has been sold; however other “Views To Go” original paintings can be viewed and purchased at my art website: http://www.pamelaallegretto-franz.com

Lake Como / Lago di Como / Painting In Italy

Lake Como / Lago di Como

PAINTING IN ITALY / LAGO DI COMO

Lake Como (Larius, as it was known to the Romans) has been called the looking glass of Venus,” and Virgil pronounced it our greatest lake.” Not to be out quoted, Stendhal characterized Lake Como as “everything noble, everything evoking love.”  With these dazzling recommendations, how can any artist resist this idyllic local?

I recommend not setting up in the town of Como, as it is a busy industrial town.  It’s not that there isn’t a plethora of squares and charming buildings to paint within the town, but if your time is limited you may prefer the smaller, more picturesque villages that line the lake.

Bellagio, which is labeled the pearl of Larius,” and has also been called “the prettiest town in Europe,” is the perfect spot to set up for a day.  Be sure to clamp down your canvas as a gust off the lake can kick up unexpectedly.  If your canvas ends up face down in your pallet, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

My personal favorite is Tremezzo, on the west shore of the lake.  Landscape artists will love the luxuriant vegetation that includes citrus trees, palms, cypresses, and magnolias.

The painting above is a mix of reality and what my mind prefers to be real.  The original 16″x20″ acrylic on canvas painting can be purchased at my art website:  http://www.pamelaallegretto-franz.com

Occasionally, I like to select a well-known person or image and scale it down to minimal lines, allowing the viewer’s eyes to fill in the gaps.  Michelangelo’s David seemed perfect for this exercise.

TUSCAN GOLD – 2

This painting is not mean to capture reality, I leave that to photographers.   This painting is about the color and mood of the day: golden.  What is a golden mood?  To me it’s the tranquility and sense of wonder when viewing a golden sunrise or sunset, or the comfort we experience while sitting by the warm glow of a hearth.  A golden mood is  serenity and harmony.  Perhaps this is why in Italy, parents wish their children: “Sogni d’oro” (golden dreams).

PAINTING IN TUSCANY – SIENA

Siena

PAINTING IN TUSCANY – SIENA

The walled city of Siena lies on three sienna-colored hills in the center of Tuscany.  Planted solidly back in the Middle Ages, this show place of Italian Gothic preserves its original character perhaps more strikingly than any other city in Italy.

If you’re a fan of painting architecture, Siena will fill your cup to over flowing.  At each turn of the city’s undulating streets you will find a paint-worthy scene.  And don’t forget the streets themselves, which are all brick-paved, and that imitate the dominant building material of brick at it’s very warmest and most subtly toned. Stairways lead to more stairways and arches frame spectacular views.  In fact, it was in one such charming backstreet that I found the inspiration for the above painting.

The original acrylic and watercolor painting of Siena can be purchased from my art website:  http://www.pamelaallegretto-franz.com
